HEARING TEST

How we do it

Our expert audiologist will test your ears by playing sounds at different pitches through a pair of headphones and asking you to press a button every time you hear a sound.

They will then ask you to wear a special headband that will test how well you hear sounds through vibrations.

We will then examine the health of your ear canals and ear drums, ensuring that sound has a clear pathway through your ears, you can even see the inside of your ear on a small screen.

If you need to wear a hearing aid, your audiologist will talk you through all the options that might be suitable for you.

HEARING TEST

Before, during and after your hearing test

1

Before - Prepare for your hearing test

Before you come for your hearing test, it'll be helpful to think about the following: 1. Make a list of the symptoms you’re experiencing 2. Write down any questions you want to ask your hearing care expert 3. Make a list of illnesses and surgeries you have had 4. Think of a family member or friend you could ask to come with you 5. In case you're interested, you can look into hearing aid types 6. Check your health insurance policy to see how you can cover the cost, and look at our hearing aid financing page 7. Reschedule your appointment if you become sick or can't attend

During your hearing test - what to expect

During the hearing test, one of our hearing care experts will take a look inside your ears using an otoscope. This instrument is designed to see whether you have any obstructions or ear infections that might be temporarily affecting your ability to hear properly. In many cases, hearing loss issues are simply a build-up of too much ear wax. You'll then be asked to listen to several sounds, usually a series of beeps, set at different frequencies. This is to find out whether you have trouble hearing certain types of sounds. This part of the hearing test is known as 'audiometry’. You may then be presented with a list of words, which will be read out to you, and which you will then be asked to repeat. This part of the hearing test is known as the ‘Familiar Voice Test’, and this is when we will ask your friend or family member to take part in the testing, so that we can assess how well you understand a familiar voice.

3

After your hearing test - what happens next?

The results from your hearing evaluation will be shared with you and recorded on an audiogram. This is a graph that shows your hearing thresholds for different frequencies. Your results will tell us if you have an audible hearing loss or not. Based on the hearing test, our experts will provide recommendations on next steps and what hearing care solutions might be right for you. If your results show that you have a hearing loss, our expert will recommend a form of hearing loss treatment. If the treatment involves hearing aids, you'll have the opportunity to see and test different types of hearing aids, depending on your hearing loss and lifestyle. If you decide that you would like to get a hearing aid, a separate appointment will then be booked to fit your hearing aids and help you get used to them.

Answers to some frequently asked questions

FAQS

  • WHAT IS EAR WAX?
Ear wax is produced by the ear to clean and protect itself. It’s secreted by glands in the skin that line the outer half of your ear canals. The wax and tiny hairs in these passages trap dust and other foreign particles that could damage deeper structures, such as your eardrum.
  • ISN'T EAR WAX GOOD FOR YOU?
You can have too much of a good thing. An Ear canal blocked up with ear wax can cause infections, earaches, deafness, a sensation of fullness in the ear, tinnitus and other problems. It’s important to get your ears checked regularly by a trained and experienced professional to preform an ear health check.
  • HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY EARS?
It’s incredibly dangerous to stick anything inside your ears as it can damage deeper structures. Additionally foreign objects inside the ear will only push the wax further into your ear canals and causing compaction. We always recommend to use natural methods such as Olive oil drops or other drops recommended by a medical professional.
  • HOW DOES IT WORK?
Microsuction ear wax removal is a very small but gentle vacuum that is used to remove the wax from your ear. It can often take up to 30 minutes to remove the wax as the suction method is very gentle to ensure your kept in comfortable and safe hands.
  • WHO IS THIS FOR?
Anyone aged 5+ can benefit from our ear wax removal service - just book in for an appointment and you'll be hearing better in no time!
  • DO YOU TREAT CHILDREN?
Yes - we can treat anyone aged 5 and over!
  • IS IT PAINFUL?
For the majority of our customers, Ear wax removal dosen’t cause any pain and can actually be quite a satisfying experience! However we always want to ensure our patients do feel at ease. If your uncomfortable at any point, you’ll be asked if you’d like to take a break or to re-arrange your appointment so that it can give you some time to settle.
  • DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING TO PREPARE FOR MY TREATMENT?
If you do get a build up of ear wax, visit your GP or local medical practitioner to have it checked out. You’ll often be advised to use ear drops to loosen your ear wax. Generally you’ll apply these drops morning and night for three days prior to your appointment. However you should follow advised instructions provided by your pharmacist.
